May Highlight: Quercetin for Spring Histamine Support & Beyond
Spring may bring sunshine, movement, and blooming trees — but for millions of Americans, it also brings congestion, itchy eyes, sneezing, postnasal drip, and fatigue. Seasonal allergies are incredibly common, with allergic rhinitis affecting an estimated 10% to 30% of people in t
he United States and hundreds of millions worldwide.

So what is actually happening in the body?
When pollen is inhaled, the immune system can mistake it for a threat and trigger an exaggerated response. Mast cells then release histamine and other inflammatory compounds, driving symptoms such as runny nose, swelling, itching, watery eyes, sinus pressure, and that overall-inflamed, reactive feeling.
This is where Quercetin comes in: Quercetin is a plant flavonoid with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that has become especially well known for its ability to help stabilize mast cells and support a healthier histamine response. Rather than only masking symptoms downstream, Quercetin may help calm part of the process upstream. That makes it especially appealing during the spring season, but quercetin’s benefits may extend beyond allergies. Quercetin is often used most effectively as part of a broader plan that may also include reducing inflammatory triggers, supporting gut health, and calming total histamine load.

Emerging & established research shows that Quercetin supports:
Healthy inflammatory balance: it has shown to help modulate inflammatory signaling and oxidative stress, making it a useful tool when the body feels revved up by seasonal triggers.
Both blood pressure & vascular support: some human studies & meta-analyses suggest Quercetin may help support healthy blood pressure, particularly in certain high-dose settings
Exercise Recovery: as many people become more active outdoors during the spring and summer months, Quercetin may also support recovery after exercise-induced muscle stress.
Brain & Nervous System Protection: Quercetin's antioxidant & anti-inflammatory effects have made it a growing area of interest in neuro-protection & healthy aging research.

Why Professional Nutraceutical Supplements matter
Not all Quercetin supplements are created equal. Products can vary widely in purity, dose, absorption, and added ingredients. We prefer professional-grade options from trusted manufacturers so patients are getting a cleaner, more reliable product.

We also offer special-order IV Quercetin through IV Boulder Clinic for patients looking for a more targeted option. Example protocol: Twice weekly for 2 weeks, then once per week x4 then “as needed” Please allow 1 week advance notice for ordering- call for pricing.
Don’t Forget the Nose: Xlear for Nasal Hygiene & Allergy Support
Your nose is one of your body’s first lines of defense. It filters pollen, dust, mold particles, smoke, and airborne microbes before they reach the lungs. During allergy season, that “filter” can become irritated, inflamed, and congested — especially overnight.
One of my favorite simple tools is Xlear nasal spray, a saline-based spray that also contains xylitol.

Xylitol is best known for oral health, but it also has interesting nasal/sinus applications. Research suggests xylitol may help reduce microbial adhesion, support healthier nasal mucus clearance, and improve sinonasal symptoms compared with saline alone in some chronic rhinosinusitis (allergies) studies. A 2022 review found xylitol nasal preparations improved SNOT-22 symptom scores compared with saline, though the evidence is strongest in certain sinus/surgical populations and is still evolving.
How to use it
For daily prevention, especially during allergy season, mold exposure, travel, or waking with congestion:1–2 sprays per nostril once or twice daily, often at bedtime and/or morning.
For active congestion, I personally find it can work quickly:2 sprays per nostril, wait a few minutes, then gently blow the nose. This can help clear what accumulated overnight without the hassle of a full neti pot rinse.
Bedtime use may be especially helpful for people who wake up stuffy, mouth-breathe at night, or feel sinus pressure in the morning.
Other potential benefits
Xylitol nasal spray has also been studied for prevention of recurrent acute otitis media in young children, with one prospective study reporting fewer ear infection episodes and no major side effects.
There is also emerging research around nasal hygiene, xylitol, and respiratory viruses including SARS-CoV-2. It may be a supportive hygiene tool, not a replacement for standard prevention or treatment.
Safety
Xlear spray is generally well tolerated. Some people may notice mild stinging, dryness, or irritation. For full sinus rinses or rinse bottles, use distilled, sterile, or previously boiled and cooled water — not straight tap water.
Important: xylitol is toxic to dogs, so keep products safely away from pets.
"If Spring leaves you feeling inflamed, reactive, congested or just not yourself, Quercitin and Xlear may be helpful foundational tools to consider in relieving your symptoms and helping you feel more like yourself again!"
