GMO foods and why you should never eat them!

What is GMO? A GMO (genetically modified organism) is the result of a laboratory process of transferring genes from one species and inserting them into another (unrelated organism) which is an attempt to obtain a desired trait or characteristic. This process of transferring genes between species is called Genetic Engineering (GE) or Genetic Modification (GM).

Why GMO?

According to the FDA, we are being fed GE foods to feed the world with a food that has better flavor, higher crop yield (output), greater resistance to insect damage, and immunity to plant diseases.

According to Dr. Micheal Antoniou, a molecular geneticist and biologist at Kings College in the London School of Medicine, the concern about GMOs is that the technology of genetic engineering is currently very crude, which he says makes it impossible insert a new gene with any accuracy. Also, the transfer of new genes can disrupt the finely controlled network of DNA in an organism. Current understanding of the way in which DNA works is extremely limited, and any change to the DNA of an organism at any point can have side effects that are impossible to predict or control. The new gene could, for example, alter chemical reactions within the cell or disturb cell functions. This leads to instability, the creation of new toxins or allergens, and changes in nutritional value.

Another researcher, Dr. Stephanie Seneff says that in the late 1990’s, the biotech company developing GMO foods (Monsanto Corp.) discovered they could put a bacterial gene into plants to make them herbicide tolerant, which was supposed allow the plant to produce it’s own pesticide (glyphosate which is the ingredient in Roundup) to kill or deter insects, saving the farmer’s from having to spray more pesticides. Unfortunately, they started seeing Roundup resistance so they had to spray more glyphosates on the plants each year to kill the weeds. Therefore, the plants themselves are toxic and they are being sprayed with more Roundup. Roundup also has surfactant additives which are more toxic and 1000x more potent than Glyphosates alone!!! Interestingly, as the usage went up, our countries health statistics showed declining health around the same time.

Dr. Seneff is a Senior Research Scientist at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. She has a BS degree from MIT in biology and a PhD from MIT in electrical engineering and computer science.

What Glyphosates do in our body

  • Disrupts our bacteria “bacteriocide and herbicide” in our own gut and microbiome

  • Damages our gut villi and brush border, which is where we exchange nutrients leading to intestinal permeability “leaky gut” increasing food sensitivities and allergies.

  • Changes the proteins of the plant, for example Wheat. This makes wheat more difficult to digest and breakdown, leading to gluten sensitivity. Also, the non-organic wheat is sprayed heavily before harvest so there is an even bigger exposure.

  • Disrupts our digestive enzyme in the Pancreas, which are Lipase, Pepsin and Trypsin, leading to a poor ability to break down proteins into amino acids. Also, the proteins we eat have glyphosates embedded in them causing immune cell activation, leading to food allergies and sensitivities

  • Causes an overgrowth of Methionine synthesis, a key sulfur containing amino acid that is used to eliminate toxins (so especially important for people with MTHFR mutation)

  • Glyphosate is a Glycine analog and the body sees glyphosate as glycine, which is a key amino acid needed for protein synthesis and DNA replication and especially for methylation, neurotransmitter balancing. But Glyphosate is not glycine so thinks negatively affects this process.

  • Glutathione synthesis is disrupted (our biggest detoxifier in the liver)

  • Glyphosates disrupt our CYP450 enzyme system which is a key pathway to excrete toxins, therefore it makes other chemicals more impactful and harmful

  • Effects the characteristics of water so more toxins enter our brain “BBB” making toxins and heavy metals enter our brain more readily

  • Impairs IGF-1, which is a growth factor for new neurons (so glyphosates directly effects our children’s neuro development leading to lower IQ, Autism and Sectrum disorders)

  • Effects our ability to utilize our essential amino acids, such as Tryptophan, Tyrosine and Phenylalanine, all of which are needed to make Serotonin which is key for a good mood!

  • Endocrine disruptor affecting hormonal function causing epigenetic changes as well, which is how our genes develop and replicate (starts in the womb) so think hormonal cancers like Breast Cancer

  • Causes weight gain due to the hormonal dysregulation as well as our fat cells storing toxins

  • Mineral depletions as glyphosate is a Mineral Chelator, which means it binds minerals so the plant doesn’t absorb the minerals, which means the plants are deficient in minerals and therefore so are we.

  • Bio-accumulates in proteins, our collagen and bone marrow

  • Heavy metals are in the pesticides as well, like Arsenic in Rice, so a synergy of the metals and the glyphosates causes even more toxicity

Scary statistic alert!

More than 60 percent of all processed foods on U.S. supermarket shelves, including; pizza, chips, cookies, ice cream, salad dressing, corn syrup, and baking powder, contain ingredients from engineered soybeans, corn, or canola.

What can I do about it?

FDA’s stand on GMO or GE foods saying it’s safe

The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) also holds an official position that “there are no risks to public health when glyphosate is used in accordance with its current label and that glyphosate is not a carcinogen,” with the EPA reiterating this stance at the end of April.

There is not one regulating body for the world, as you can see each country is making it’s own judgements on safety and the level they feel is safe for humans. The U.S. has the lowest standards and allows the highest amounts of glyphosates used on the GMO foods. The FDA says it’s safe and is regulated but there is not one organization monitoring this and all agencies “fail to question the technology and basic science says you cannot treat DNA in isolation” according to Dr. Antoniou.

Now here we get political, The FDA official in charge ignored all warnings of the FDA staff scientist. The studies did find multiple liver, kidney, immune “allergies” and digestive issues on the animals tested using controlled feedings with the glyphosate GMO foods. Despite this information, the official, a former outside attorney for Monsanto (the leading company for Roundup/glyphosates), was a political appointee specifically to a new FDA post on GM policy, and left shortly after to become vice president at Monsanto.

Monsanto Co., which is now owned by German pharmaceutical giant Bayer AG, denies that Roundup and its key ingredient, glyphosate, are carcinogenic or that the herbicide poses a health risk when used according to label instructions.

New studies in 2019 report cancer links and concerns about the validity of the EPA /FDA classification:

  • April 2019: the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry issued its draft toxicological profile for glyphosate. The report confirms increased cancer risk from glyphosate exposures. (Emails released via court proceedings show officials at EPA and Monsanto trying to stop the ATSDR report; read the emails here.)

  • March 2019 study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology analyzed data from more than 30,000 farmers and agricultural workers from studies done in France, Norway and the U.S., and reported links between glyphosate and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma.

  • February 2019: A new meta-analysis published in Mutation Research/Reviews in Mutation Research reported a “compelling link” between glyphosate-based herbicides and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Three of the study authors were members of the EPA’s scientific advisory panel on glyphosate who have stated publicly that the EPA failed to follow proper scientific practices in its glyphosate assessment.

  • January 2019: An analysis published in Environmental Sciences Europe argues that the U.S. EPA’s classification of glyphosate disregarded substantial scientific evidence of genotoxicity (the negative impact on a cell’s genetic material) associated with weed killing products such as Roundup.

  • A 2019 study in a Nature journal reported increases in obesity, reproductive and kidney diseases, and other problems in the second- and third-generation offspring of rats exposed to glyphosate. See the study and Washington State University press release.

  • A birth cohort study in Indiana published in 2017 – the first study of glyphosate exposure in US pregnant women using urine specimens as a direct measure of exposure – found detectable levels of glyphosate in more than 90% of the pregnant women tested and found the levels were significantly correlated with shortened pregnancy lengths.

  • A 2018 ecological and population study conducted in Argentina found high concentrations of glyphosate in the soil and dust in agricultural areas that also reported higher rates of spontaneous abortion and congenital abnormalities in children, suggesting a link between environmental exposure to glyphosate and reproductive problems. No other relevant sources of pollution were identified.

  • A 2017 study associated chronic, very low-level glyphosate exposures to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in rats. According to the researchers, the results “imply that chronic consumption of extremely low levels of a GBH formulation (Roundup), at admissible glyphosate-equivalent concentrations, are associated with marked alterations of the liver proteome and metabolome,” the biomarkers for NAFLD.

  • A 2018 rat study conducted by the Ramazzini Institute reported that low-dose exposures to Roundup at levels considered safe significantly altered the gut microbiota in some of the rat pups. Another 2018 study reported that higher levels of glyphosate administered to mice disrupted the gut microbiota and caused anxiety and depression-like behaviors.

  • A 2018 rat study by Argentinian researchers linked low-level perinatal glyphosate exposures to impaired female reproductive performance and congenital anomalies in the next generation of offspring.

Important information on lawsuits against Monsanto

Monsanto Co. recently lost a legal battle over its massively popular Roundup herbicide to the tune of $2.055 billion, with a jury in San Francisco ordering the court to pay the couple who said it caused their Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

In another case, a jury in state court in Alameda County awarded $80 million to a man who claimed that Roundup had caused his Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. In August, a state court in San Francisco found that Roundup had caused the cancer of a school groundskeeper, awarding him $289 million. A judge reduced that figure to $78 million. That verdict is being appealed.

An estimated 13,000 additional lawsuits against Monsanto, which Bayer acquired last year, are queued up in state and federal courts.

Monsanto influence in research: In March 2017, the federal court judge unsealed some internal Monsanto documents that raised new questions about Monsanto’s influence on the EPA process and about the research regulators rely on. The documents suggest that Monsanto’s long-standing claims about the safety of glyphosate and Roundup do not necessarily rely on sound science as the company asserts, but on efforts to manipulate the science. A study for the European Parliament published January 2019 asserts that the EU approval of glyphosate was based on plagiarized text from Monsanto. The study found plagiarism in 50.1 percent of chapters dealing with the assessment of published studies on health risks related to glyphosate in Germany’s Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, including whole paragraphs and entire pages of plagiarized text.

What the rest of the world is doing about this problem

In 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) “probably carcinogenic to humans” after reviewing years of published and peer-reviewed scientific studies. The team of international scientists found there was an association between glyphosate and non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

All over the world, regions and even nations are demanding an end to GM crop cultivation. Twenty-two countries in Europe have regions wanting to be GM-free. States in Australia, regions in New Zealand and Brazil, the countries of Venezuela, Zambia, Sudan, Angola, and others, all want to be GM-free.

In 2009, Germany joined France, Hungary, Italy, Greece, Austria, Poland and Romania in banning Monsanto’s Mon 810 GM corn because of its documented hazards to biodiversity and human health. In 2007 over three million Italians signed a petition, declaring their opposition to GM crops in their country. In Europe over 175 regions and over 4,500 municipalities have declared themselves GM-free zones. In Spain alone this includes over 50 municipalities and regions like Asturias, the Canary Islands and the Basque country.

Europe has greater rejection of GMOs due to a more balanced reporting by their press on the health and environmental dangers. In Europe, at least 174 regions, more than 4,500 councils and local governments have declared themselves GM free.

Based on this information, we as consumers need to be educated and knowledgeable about how to protect ourselves and not rely on our government to do this for us.
